The Rocks class has been exploring clay. Beginning in December with experimentation, we saw that strong gripping muscles were needed for pulling a handful of clay from the large block. We discovered that clay can be squeezed, pressed, and manipulated with fingers, palms, fists, and even elbows!
Since January, we have practiced handling techniques for shaping...
a coil ("Roll it back and forth"),
a ball ("Roll it round and round," "Move your hand like stirring"),
and a slab ("Make a ball and smash it," "Press it hard!").
These basic shapes then became the building blocks for many creations!
